The Maïdo

Saturday 12 July – half day optional excursion (30 EUR)

  • Departure: early morning, return to hotels by 12:00
  • Please bring warm clothes.

The Maïdo road is by far the best circuit from Saint-Paul. It’s best to go there early in the morning as it often becomes covered in cloud. In ten minutes via the road from Bernica, you are suddenly in another world. The path winds between geranium fields, mimosa-filled groves, and green pastures. With its mild climate and balmy air, la Petite-France is an invitation to linger. Higher up, from 1200 m, forests of tamarinds provide a lacy backdrop against a sky of intense purity. Once past the forest, approaching the ramparts with great care, one can see a a spectacular view from 2200m altitude: An astounding landscape with the greatest heights of the island, dangerous mountain passes that lead up to a nearly unsurmountable barrier. The volcano, the Taïbit and the Gros Morne are in front of us.

On the way back, we stop at a geranium distillery where you can discover how this perfume has been produced since ancient times. Still today, geranium cannot be reproduced chemically. We also stop at the cemetery to located along the beach you’ll  see the famous pirate’s grave La Buse who was decapitated in the 17th century and other very old graves.
