It is a great pleasure to welcome you on the website of the conference “The European Union and its Overseas Entities: Strategies to counter Climate Change and Biodiversity Loss”, which will be hosted on Reunion Island from 07 to 11 July 2008, under the auspices of the French Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
In view of the increasing challenges of climate change and biodiversity loss, the conference will bring together for the first time representatives from the EU's 7 Outermost Regions (ORs) and 21 Overseas Countries and Territories (OCTs). These will be joined by delegates from EU member states, the European institutions, selected Small Island Developing States (SIDS), international and regional organisations, research institutes, civil society and the private sector. The CO2 emissions will be compensated through projects in the region.
The event is organised by IUCN (International Union for the Conservation of Nature), the Regional Council of Reunion Island and the French Observatory of the Impacts of Global Warming (ONERC), in partnership with the French Ministry of Internal Affairs and Overseas and Territorial Collectivities. It is part of the cooperation agreement between IUCN and the French Ministries for the Environment and for External Affairs.
The conference aims to enhance and reinforce actions relating to climate change adaptation, sustainable energy, biodiversity conservation and ecosystem management. It will propose new strategies and action programmes to address these issues across the EU’s overseas entities and the regions that surround them.
As space is limited, we encourage all invited participants to register as soon as possible, and look forward to your participation!
